Nathan Sawaya: The Art of the Brick

June 7-Aug. 10
Opening Reception: June 6; 6-9 pm

Nathan Sawaya in the news:

* Good Morning America, ABC News, April 14, 2008
* CNN Interview, June 1, 2007
* Winner, Dream Job at the LegoLand, Wired Magazine, January 27, 2004

The Art of the Brick museum show is currently touring the U.S. It is the first major museum exhibition in the United States to focus exclusively on the use of the popular LEGO® building block as an art medium and artist Nathan Sawaya takes it to new heights.

This 33-year-old New York artist is exhibiting more than thirty works created solely from standard LEGO bricks over the period 2002 – 2007 with several new ones created specifically for this exhibit. Nearly one million colorful LEGO pieces transformed into whimsical and awe-inspiring images are on display.

Sawaya’s ability to transform this common toy into something meaningful, his devotion to spatial perfection and the way he conceptualizes action, enables him to elevate what almost every child has played with into the status of art.

“These works are very personal to me, since they reflect my growth as an artist as I strove to discover my creative identity,” said Sawaya. “The museum exhibit is accessible because it engages the child in all of us while simultaneously illuminating sophisticated and complex concepts.”

I have an 8 year old daughter who was inquiring about a Lego competition or exhibit. She has recently shown an interest in Lego's. Are there any exhibits or competitions in the Orlando area that you would reccomend?
